The partner of Villaseca Abogados, Loreto Vera, recently participated in an intensive practical course on “Conservation and management of microorganisms for bacterial crop collections”, together with the academic and researcher of the Department of Biotechnology of Antofagasta University, Mario Esparza ph.D., developed in the Microbial Resource Depositary Bank of the Agricultural Research Institute (INIA Chile).
This center, located in Chillan, is one of the 46 around the world that has the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as an international authorized patent deposit center. In addition, it is a reference in all Latin America, where there is only one similar in Mexico, for the ex situ preservation of microorganisms. The university researcher has stored several samples there, thanks to the efforts of the Transfer and Licensing Office (OTL-UA) of Antofagasta University and the advice of Villaseca Abogados.
The partner of Villaseca Abogados, Loreto Vera, explains that the link with the banks of biological material, both national and international, constitutes one of the fundamental steps in the process of processing biotechnological patents. In addition, it is very important that Universities or Research Centers have the tools, knowledge and adequate management of the services of these centers to support their researchers in a cost-effective manner, strengthen biotechnological innovations and effectively promote the transfer of knowledge.
