The National Customs Service of Chile made a positive balance of the inspection work carried out during this 2019. According to their statistics, between January and November of this year, more than 11.6 million counterfeit products were seized, almost 64% more compared to the same period of 2018, and an estimated valuation of more than 139 million dollars.

The most pirated items are toys, cell phone accessories, clothing, shoes and electronic and desktop items. Among the most counterfeit brands are Happy Feet, Samsung, Disney, Lego, Fox, Pokemon, Huawei, Marvel and Motorola.

In the field of public health, it is also necessary to recognize the work of inspection of Customs officials, whose control work allowed to seize more than five million goods potentially harmful to people, with an increase of 32.5% compared to same period of 2018. The main types of merchandise are toys, medical devices and cosmetics.

For Felipe Pavez, a partner of Villaseca Abogados, “the authorities are making a special effort to control the illegal traffic of these products. They are also making progress in coordination between different organizations and sectors for their detection”. However, he adds: “Unfortunately, it is still not enough, since it is also necessary to develop an education plan on the seriousness of these crimes, which are perceived by a large part of the population as almost harmless, and on the risks to that the population is exposed, when consuming counterfeit products. For example, despite the efforts of local authorities, street trade flourished in the days before Christmas, without control. Many of the products that are sold informally are counterfeit products, whose manufacture is made without the quality and safety standards of the original products”.

Finally, regarding the confiscation of cigarettes, in all of Chile it was avoided the entry of more than 14 million packs, which means a tax evasion of more than 54 million dollars.
