After more than four years of processing, Chile recognized the designation of the origin of Gorgonzola cheese as 100% Italian. In a recent ruling, the National Institute of Industrial Property (Inapi) established that only the renowned blue cheese, from the Lombardy and Piedmont regions of Italy, can be sold under the name Gorgonzola in Chile.

The application was submitted by the “Consorzio per la tutela del formaggio Gorgonzola”, the group that brings together the Italian producers of this cheese and which was represented by the Villaseca Abogados studio.

The Italian group’s application was opposed by the American dairy producer organization U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) which was dismissed thanks to a technical examination carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture that analyzed the market for Gorgonzola cheese in Chile.

The associate of Villaseca Abogados, Francisco Valverde, explained to DFMas that the report revealed that only a very small volume of blue cheese from the United States entered our country, therefore, it could not be considered generic. Read the full note here: https://bit.ly/3mXNBkD.
